Bitwise Operator

Final statement

It's been about 5 years since I, Simon Kenny, have produced anything as Bitwise Operator, so the time has come to hang up the synths and call it like it is. Bitwise Operator is no more

I named the project in 2005 with musical collaborator Michael Sherry. In case you didn't know it's a very nerdy name, a bitwise operation is a thing a computer does to move "bits" around. "Bits" are the fundamental item of storage, either on or off, handily represented by the binary number system. Anyway you get the idea, we were programmers.

I had been producing original electronic music and thought I'd try to make a go of it and package it under an artist name. My early influences were Nine Inch Nails, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, The Prodigy, Plaid, and too many others to name. But those were the main ones. If you listen to the early stuff on the Converter EP (or the extended version just released) you'll definitely be able to pick out those influences. Really it's all a homage as the music is not exactly that original in retrospect.

It was incredible fun making this stuff. It's the kind of music you get glued to the computer screen while doing, listening over and over again, cutting things up minutely, getting deep into your own conceptual ideas.

Also featured on some of the older tracks are Michael Sherry and Nuala Kenny on vocals, and Mayt Lynch on heavily processed guitars. The heavy music remixes are labelled as such, and there's also collaborations with Andrew Madec, Alis and Robin van der Klooster.

Anyway this is meant to be a bit of a ramble but I'll wrap it up. I'm releasing the stuff I've kept in the archives, a few projects I half finished, in case someone gets something from it. These aren't as professionally produced, edited or even written as I'd have liked but time has moved on. I'm shitting then getting off the pot.

A huge huge HUGE thank you to everyone who encouraged me, played the stuff in thier cafe, bedroom or radio station, came to / put on gigs, and just listened to the stuff. Special thanks to Ray Wingnut, Jimmy Penguin, Saibh Egan, Sarah, Andy (both deviant and Dublin), Sebi C, Sai, and of course my family, especially my parents and Uncle Chris for giving me a totally legal copy of some music software when I was 17.

Enjoy, all ye who stumble here! You can find all the music on Bandcamp.

Archive release list

Converter Extended Edition

Super oldies, some of these are as old as 2004. Gritty, dark and not very high production value.

Remixes of Metal

A part finished remix project of several Irish metal bands. Here are the ones that are the most finished.

Late Stage

Final original solo Bitwise Operator album. Bits and bobs which were going to make it into other albums or projects but didn't. Ends with some live stuff.

And Friends

Really the last one, collaborations with friends. The End.
